Chapter Ten

Heather woke to a clap of thunder. Heavy rain battered her roof and rattled her windowpanes. She forced her eyes open one at a time, not ready to face the world after such a miserable night. Her legs ached and her head throbbed.

Her heart hurt even more. For the first time in years, she wanted to hide under the covers, much liked her pup, Rosie, cowered under the bed when storms moved in.

With a groan, she thanked God she didn’t have to work today. She could stay in if she wanted and, at the moment, grey skies and thunderstorms didn’t motivate her in the least or improve her mood.

She blinked and saw Ben’s razor in her mind’s eye. She’d never be able to go back to sleep. As she sat up, a streak of lightning forked through the clouds outside her window, a low rumble of thunder following without hesitation. Snuggled beside her, Rosie whined.

In the silence that followed, a knock sounded at Heather’s front door, sharper and more persistent than the rain. Her heart stuttered and she glanced at her clock. Nearly noon.

Reaching for her robe, she shoved her dirty feet into her slippers and shuffled through the house, the dog on her heels. Who wanted her this time of day? Might be the sheriff. She peered through the sheers onto the front porch, only a slight shadow visible through the rain. Damn it all. Could be anyone.

She shrugged on her robe and pulled the cord tight, then cracked the door an inch. Ben stood on her doorstep, soaked and shivering. He lifted his head and met her gaze, his sandy eyebrows drawn together.

He attempted a smile. “Hey.”

Seeing him lifted a thousand pounds off her shoulders. She opened the door a bit further. “Hey, you’re all wet.”

He ran a hand through his damp hair and looked over his shoulder. “I had to see you. I’ll go if you want.”

With the events of the last day, she hesitated to let him in. While she still felt safer with him than anyone else, people were already talking. His visit would give them something new to chew on when she wanted most to disappear.

“Come in and dry off,” she offered, motioning him into the kitchen where she handed him a stack of towels, fresh off the line. “When did Lyle let you out?”

Rather than taking the towels, he caught her trembling hand, rainwater rolling from his skin to hers. She suppressed the urge to put her arms around him while he took a deep breath. “He had to let me out. I didn’t do it.”

She sighed. “In my heart, I know that. I’m just a little shaky.” She pulled free, cringing at the memory of the evidence in his cabin. She went to the stove to heat water for tea. If she felt like hell, she must look like hell. “You can imagine how this feels to me.”

Silence hung in the room like the thunderheads outside, heavy and ominous. She needed
